Den Sista Tolv Dagar i Sverige!

Hello All!

I am writing to you from my home in Canada, how weird is that? I began my journey home last Friday. I had to take a taxi from Åre in Sweden to the airport in Trondheim, Norway bright and early Friday morning as my host mom hit a moose the day before and totalled the vehicle. I will say, taking a taxi all alone leaving from exchange was kind of hard, I cried the whole two hours and I felt really awkward but its whatever, nothing you can really do. After I struggled with checking in all my bags, and talking my way out of a $450 overweight/extra luggage fee (how good am I?) I took my first flight to Amsterdam. Once in Amsterdam, I had 4 hours to kill. I went and ate, and then randomly ran into one of my exchange student friends who is Canadian but was living in Stockholm this year, MacKenzie. We had no idea that we would both be in Amsterdam on the same day so that was a complete coincidence, but kind of nice to talk to someone who is dealing with the exact same thing you are.

I then flew from Amsterdam to Toronto where I had barely any time and I went to the wrong terminal, got stuck in massive elevator lines, and it took a long time to get my bags and go through customs, so by the time I finally got to the right terminal where I had to re check my bags in again, my flight was already boarding and I hadn’t even made it to security. So the nice girl at the counter was so worried for me she got me an escort right to the front of security and again I escaped the luggage fees. You are only supposed to have one checked bag of 23 kg and I had one bag that was 40 kg and my second bag was 33 kg, I think I did pretty well there ;). I arrived to Thunder-Bay at 12:00 am local time and was greeted at the airport by my parents, it was definitely one of those moments that words can’t really describe. It really hadn’t felt like a whole year since I said goodbye to them there.

We stayed at a hotel that night since it was so late, and then drove four hours home the next day. But before I talk about what it is like being home again, I want to share a little bit about my last 12 days in Sweden, so from after my birthday until I left. The day after my birthday and for another two days after I just basically died at home. Recovering from eurotour was tough, and I was sick on top of that too. The most sleep I had received in the whole month prior was 4 hours in one night. I spent a few days in Åre, picked up some last minute souvenirs to take home, and did a little wandering.

Then my lovely Moa and first host family came home from their 3 week vacation on Gotland! I had missed her so much, because I never got a chance to see her before I left for eurotour. On Sunday (two weeks ago now) I went with her to see her horse, and then we went to her little cousins first birthday party.I had met a lot of her family already, but it was nice to meet a few more new faces!

It was a really nice afternoon in the sun because apparently Sweden is having the warmest summer in over 100 years or something crazy like that. In the Norrland region of Sweden where I was living it was apparently the warmest location in all of Europe, really crazy. That evening we went out to a place called Fäviken where Moa and their medieval team were practice riding their horses for an upcoming medieval tournament. We ordered pizza and had a picnic in the middle of a field with a gorgeous view of the mountains in the setting sun, seriously nothing better.

On Monday I went in to Moa’s house and we just chilled there for a little while. We then had an idea to go buy some food “fika” and go to the beach. We spent a few hours there, and the water was so so warm, never thought I would say swimming in Swedish lakes was warm and fun because the first time I did it, it was so cold like maybe only +8 in the water.

On Tuesday I basically should have received the best host sister award because I woke up at 5 am, so I could catch the train at 6:20 am after walking 3 kilometers to the train station so that I could go to Östersund with Moa as she had an appointment. After her appointment we went and had fika, one of my last in Sweden which was super sad 😦 and then we did a little shopping before I went home.

I took a nap and then went back to Moa where we took her horse for an evening swim. It was so much fun until the horse stepped right on top of my bare foot.. yep it’s STILL sore and really ugly coloured but oh well.

On Wednesday my friend Ellen came over and we just caught up on life and talked for a really long time. She has been going to school and working in Östersund all year so we never really got to see each other a lot. After talking practically all afternoon we decided to drive to Åre and get some ice cream at a little cafe called Grädda. We sat outside in the +30 heat and our ice cream was literally melting the second we stepped out of the door. But sitting outside, eating ice cream, with the view of the mountains was absolutely amazing. Ellen drove me home around 5, and then I had dinner at home, packed a little more and then Markus came over for a little visit and to say goodbye. Markus was one of my first friends in Sweden, so it was kind of tough to say goodbye to him, but I hope some day we will meet again!

THURSDAY! Thursday was my last day in Sweden, so I really was under pressure to finish my packing in the morning, and then in the afternoon I went over to my first host family’s home. We chilled out on the deck in the sun, and we all went to a place called Tossön for dinner with the rest of all the medieval horse riders and some special riders who had come all the way from the Ukraine. They could not speak any English at all so it was hard to communicate with them individually but they had a translator for the group. The dinner was smoked moose meat, potato salad, and vegetables with a delicious strawberry cake (jordgubbstårta) for dessert, so Swedish. We then took an evening swim, and I was forced to say goodbye. First was my little host sister Alma, and she told me she would call the police on me if I left Sweden, how sweet is she. That goodbye was not easy, Alma really is my little sister, and I love her to pieces. I know that it wont be long until I see her again! Next was my first host mom Maria, this goodbye sucked. I lived with her for the first 7 months of my exchange, and became really close to her, there were many tears by this point, she was hugging me and Moa and told me she loves me as her own daughter. Moa and Mikael drove me home and along the way we picked up Kajsa. They stayed with me for about an hour, and then I had to say goodbye to the three of them. Saying goodbye to Moa was the absolute worst thing I had to do that day, she is my sister from another mister and I have spent so much time and created so many memories with her in the year that I was in Sweden. We have already planned for me to go back and for her to come here in Canada! I miss everyone SO SO much already. And as I told you already Friday morning I was airport bound really early after a quick breakfast and saying goodbye to my third host family.

I also took quite a lot of beautiful sunset pictures in my last few days in Sweden, I would just like to share a few so you can see how spectacular it is.

What can I say? Swedish sunsets never disappoint. I guess I can tell you a little about after exchange life and what I have been up to since I got home. I came home to a surprise from two of my best friends Nora and Brooke, and then I went and surprised all of my other friends at a party they weren’t expecting me to go to. I have been catching up with a lot of friends and going for coffee, some long weekend camping and fun stuff.  Then I started working again, I work like every day it feels like but the money will be nice when I go back to Sweden. Speaking of Sweden, I miss it SO MUCH. I feel like no one here understands, and they all think I am crazy for wanting to go back. I am literally living in two completely different worlds now. But honestly, Sweden feels more like home now than Canada (sorry, eh.) I miss the people, the food, the language, I miss hearing and speaking that beautiful language every single day. Do you know how boring English seems now? I miss my friends, and my families more than I ever missed anyone back in Canada while I was away, because I knew I would see all of them again and that it would only be one year, I have no idea when or if I will see everyone back in Sweden but I hope it is soon! I miss the lifestyle, the mountains, absolutely everything that we sometimes take for granted. But I think you get the point, because I could go on for ever and ever. Sweden is where I belong, and I will be back.

Until then,

xx Jessie

Lång Uppdatering, Snart Jul!

Hej allihopa!

I feel like even though it has only been a little over two weeks, that it has been forever since I last updated you on life in Sweden!

Just one week a way until Christmas, lots is happening, and it FINALLY is starting to feel like Christmas!

Two weekends ago, I went to Kajsa on Saturday to do some Christmas baking and get into the spirit. We started making lussebullar, which is Lucia Buns made from Saffron (from the flower). Lucia is celebrated in Sweden on December 13th. I don’t know how to exactly explain it, especially since neither do most Swedish people, but I can give you the direct explanation from one of my friends, Albin. “Well it’s some Italian saint I believe who was really kind to everyone but was killed by some dictator I think. Still everyone’s sad that shes dead now and therefor we celebrate her every year.” So I still don’t exactly really know the meaning behind Lucia, although I did get to see a little part of it (more on that later). The lussebullar that Kajsa and I made were delicious. We then followed by making a few different types of fudge, ginger and coconut, as well as cappuccino. They were so tasty, and it was all in all a fun day to be in the kitchen!

On Sunday I had planned to go skiing in Åre with Albin, but we were unable to go due to some injuries, but I look forward to getting out on the slopes soon especially since I got my own skis today! So instead I just took it easy on Sunday, got some cleaning done and relaxed by the fire. Monday our school had a “sports day” I guess you could call it. They had an indoor volleyball tournament, or you could choose to do curling. Since my fluency in the Swedish language is not so good, and it would be super difficult for a volleyball team to translate for me, I opted for the curling. I had only ever tried curling once before (which is rather surprising being Canadian and all) and it was in the 8th grade with my class of all girls, so I’m sure you can only imagine how that turned out. So this time, was to try for real. And believe me, it is definitely a lot more difficult that it looks, and I am not the best at all, but it was a fun day to get away from class, be active and try something well, sort of new.

On this past Thursday, I had planned to venture off to Stockholm for the weekend with my host sister Moa although we would not be staying at the same place. We had got on the train here in Järpen after school only to find out that our train from Östersund to Stockholm had been cancelled due to a MASSIVE storm that was rolling in. So we decided to go in to Östersund anyways to talk to the train company and see what they could do for us. They said we could either re-book a ticket for the next day (which we had originally done for 0545 am!) or we could have our money back. But then came the question of, where to stay for the night in Östersund, then it became a bit tricky. After a few phone calls, my host mom Maria said she could get us on a flight the next day for only 100 kronor (15 dollars) more, so we decided to take it, and it also sped up the travel time quite a bit 45 minutes versus 6.5 hours! She then told us to get on the next bus home since the storm was starting to pick up quite rapidly. The bus we got on, was the ONLY bus that was going, even though it really shouldn’t have been. I’m pretty sure we were having a hurricane or something, the wind was so crazy the bus driver couldn’t even control the bus and we were all over the road, and in the words of Moa “it was like he was really really drunk or something”, it was horrible and the most terrifying bus trip ever. We got about 5 km from home when a ginormous tree fell and just missed our bus resulting in the driver to slam on the brakes.  There was absolutely no way our bus was going to make it through, and the driver said we would have to spend the night on the bus. I was so angry, we were extremely close to home so Moa called Maria and she came and rescued us from the bus, I was so thankful and lucky that night, that no words will ever be able to describe it. After she got us from the bus, she captured this beautiful picture of me.

The quality is not the best, but perhaps if you focus, you can see the huge tree that fell right behind me, the bus, and me practically running for my life. There was so much damage from the storm that night, our dog went missing for 6 hours, the train station in Åre was destroyed and as well as a cafe. On the news they said that “All of the trees that fell in the storm, Ivar equals the entire amount of trees that are being chopped down in a whole year for the entire province of Jämtland”. So hopefully that gives you an idea of just how bad it was. Here are some pictures from the damage in Åre.

We were so lucky we had decided to take the flight on Friday since all of the trains ended up being cancelled that day also. So my host parents drove Moa and I to the airport to catch a 12:40 flight. It was a beautiful day to fly.  Moa’s godparents met us at Arlanda airport in Stockholm, where I caught a glimpse of Lucia, and they were kind enough to drive me to Julia and Felix’s home where I would spend the weekend.

After getting to Julia and Felix’s and settling in a bit, they were in the city, and told me to come join them for dinner. This required me to take the Subway for the first time by myself, during rush hour might I add and it was extremely successful which was awesome and I was so proud! We had dinner at a really awesome Thai restaurant where they had EVERYTHING you could even imagine to make your own stir-fry and then they cooked it right in front of you, so that was cool and it was super good. We walked a bit in the city after, then went home for the night to watch a movie and eat some junk food, always fun and after all that travel, a nice relaxing night in was exactly what I needed! I spent Saturday walking around the city with my friend Aakanksha or as we all call her (Cherry). She is from India and is living right in Stockholm, so she knew exactly what to do and see and despite the pouring rain/snow it was really fun! We went to Gamla Stan (old town) walked through some of the islands over to the Town Hall which I had never been too, and just had a really nice time. We then met some of the other Exchange Students for a fika at Espresso House. They included Narain and Mackenzie (both from Canada), Kate and Andrew from the US, Oliver from Australia, Grabriela from Brazil, Abraham from Mexico as well as Cherry and myself. It was fun, and nice to talk about our experiences so far, what we are really enjoying, what we aren’t really enjoy, our host families, our friends, our schools all of those important things that can either make or break your year as an exchange student. We then just walked around as a group, ate at Subway, were being completely ridiculous, you know, the usual Exchange Student life. Around dinner we all went home, and then maybe an hour or two later I went back into the city to meet my Italian friend Sofia, we had another fika at Espresso house and took the longest walk ever I thought my feet were going to fall off but it was so nice, to just talk, and take pictures and enjoy the beautiful city of Stockholm, especially at Christmas time!

On Sunday, I was with Sofia again. This time we were all over the city trying to find a gift for her host father who was celebrating his birthday that day (typical exchange students leaving it until the VERY LAST MINUTE) but it was nice to go along with her, and see which area she has her school and check out some new shopping places. We went to one store called Nordiska Kompaniet which is maybe the equivalent of Hudson’s Bay Company in Canada? It was SO FREAKING HUGE and in the middle was the biggest Christmas tree I had ever seen. I finished off Sunday night with some ice skating at Kungsträdgården and some frozen yogurt from the Original Swedish Frozen Yogurt Factory, yum!

Monday morning I took the subway again during rush hour alone with my suitcase and everything, and successfully found my way to the Central Station where I met up with Moa again and we tried to take a direct train home to Järpen. All was good until we got to Östersund and they told us that the train would stop there since all of the lines were down between Östersund-Duved from that huge storm, and that the train company had paid for us all to take a bus home. I wasn’t necessarily angry, but more so frustrated, and exhausted from travelling and I just wanted to be home, not stuck on some bus. But whatever, I made it and it all worked out this time, which was definitely a lot better than the last time on the bus!

This week marks the last week of school before Christmas break! Hooray! And on Friday my Australian friend Stefan will come to Åre-Järpen to have Christmas with me as his host family is going to be away! It will be super fun if we can get out skiing since it seems as though they are opening more and more slopes almost everyday! I think I should wrap this up though as it is basically becoming a novel, but I will update you on “Swedish Christmas” in a week or two!

But until then, enjoy the holidays, eat lots of food, have fun with your family, follow some traditions, whatever puts you into that festive spirit!

Merry Christmas, God Jul
